Asia Pacific Applied Arts Forum (APAAF)

Hello All!  I have just returned from the Beijing Olympics. What an amazing amount of new design and vitality.  I look forward to working on the selection of 30 examples of Chinese Applied Arts (craft and design) to update the China pages on the APAAF.  I would like your suggestions. Please try to include examples from all parts of China and a balance of design and craft, both traditional and new, from hand-made to industrial production.  All works must be functional. This selection is focused on products not art like painting, sculpture, etc.  The selection may include architecture, garden-urban design, furniture, textile-clothing-fashion ( hats, shoes, costume, worker's clothes, etc) , ceramic-pottery, jewellery, home ware, industrial design, celebrations-festivals, graphic design (both print and electronic) typographic design/communication, illustration, signage, website, poster, package design, logos, etc.  Some selections may be produced by Chinese teams that may include global partners, others may come from "folk" designers-craftspeople, in addition to professional, university-academy educted designers. Some works may have received awards others may be vernacular (design from the streets).   I look forward to discussing your suggestions over the coming months.

The selections should be from the past two or three years. This is what we need for each selection:

Title of work

Maker ( designer, craftsperson or company name)

City, Province

Date

A brief amount of text (30-50 words) about the object. You may include informaiion about the idea and concept of the work, materials, process, production, relationship to history, market, etc.

Links/Sources- Please provide web and other sources

You will be credited for each of your suggetions used on the site.

I look forward to hearing from you soon

(please visit the APAAF and see the selections from the mid- 1990s.  These items were represented in one of the first ever exhbitions of Chinese Applied Arts to travel to Canada and US. The selections for this mid-2000 update may be part of a traveling exhition in the future.)
